Dryer Vent Cleaning: How Often and Why It Matters

Clogged dryer vents cause 2,900 home fires annually. Here's how often to clean your vent, the warning signs, and what professional cleaning costs.

The NFPA reports that failure to clean dryer vents is the leading cause of dryer fires, responsible for 34% of all home dryer fires. It's also one of the most neglected maintenance items. Here's everything you need to know.

How often to clean your dryer vent

Annual cleaning is the standard recommendation for most households. If you do laundry for 4+ people or notice the warning signs below, clean every 6 months. Longer vent runs (over 10 feet) and vents with elbows accumulate lint faster and need more frequent attention.

Warning signs of a clogged vent

Your dryer is telling you the vent is restricted if:

  • Clothes take more than one cycle to dry
  • Dryer is hot to the touch during a cycle
  • Laundry room feels humid or warm while drying
  • Lint visible around the dryer vent opening outside
  • Burning smell during operation

DIY vs. professional cleaning

DIY: A dryer vent cleaning kit ($20-$30) includes a flexible brush that attaches to a drill. This works well for straight, short vent runs. Professional service ($100-$175) uses commercial rotary equipment and can clean longer, more complex vent runs with multiple elbows.

Vent installation matters too

Flexible foil accordion duct (the silver flexible hose) traps lint in the folds and should be replaced with rigid metal duct wherever possible. The NFPA and most appliance manufacturers require rigid metal duct. If your dryer uses flexible foil duct, replacing it with rigid metal ($50-$150) dramatically reduces fire risk and improves dryer efficiency.

Bottom line

Annual dryer vent cleaning takes 30 minutes and costs $20-$30 DIY. A dryer fire costs your home. This is one maintenance task to put on a calendar and actually do.
