Air Duct Cleaning Cost: Is It Worth It in 2026?

Air duct cleaning costs $300-$700 for a typical home. Here's when it's worth it, when it's not, and how to avoid scam pricing.

6 min read·Updated January 2026·HVAC

Duct cleaning is one of the most advertised -- and most misunderstood -- HVAC services. $99 deals are almost always scams. Here's what it actually costs and when you actually need it.

What legitimate duct cleaning costs

A proper duct cleaning for a 2,000 sq ft home with a single HVAC system runs $300-$500. Larger homes or homes with two systems: $500-$700. The EPA recommends being skeptical of any company offering whole-house cleaning for under $200 -- they use it as a loss leader to upsell unnecessary services.

What the service actually includes

Legitimate duct cleaning involves: truck-mounted vacuum equipment (not portable units), cleaning supply and return registers, cleaning the air handler and coil, and inspecting for mold or damage. The job should take 2-5 hours for a typical home.

When duct cleaning is actually worth it

The EPA says duct cleaning is warranted when: ducts have visible mold growth, ducts are infested with rodents or insects, or ducts are clogged with excessive debris that restricts airflow. Routine cleaning 'to improve air quality' has limited scientific support.

  • After buying a home (especially older builds)
  • After major renovation or construction
  • Visible mold in supply registers
  • Rodent or insect infestation confirmed
  • Family members with unexplained allergy symptoms

Red flags to avoid

Avoid any company offering duct cleaning under $200 for a whole house. Avoid companies that claim cleaning will dramatically lower your energy bills -- the evidence doesn't support this. Avoid add-on 'sanitizing spray' upsells unless mold is actually confirmed.

Bottom line

If your ducts genuinely need cleaning, budget $300-$600 for a legitimate service. Don't fall for $99 specials -- they exist to get a foot in the door.
