How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters?

Most homes need gutter cleaning twice a year. Here's how to tell if your home needs it more often -- and what happens when you skip it.

Clogged gutters are one of the top causes of water damage to homes -- yet gutter cleaning is consistently one of the most skipped maintenance tasks. Here's the schedule and the stakes.

The standard twice-a-year schedule

Clean gutters in late spring (after seeds and pollen fall) and again in late fall (after leaves are completely down, typically November-December). These two cleanings handle the main debris loads for most homes with moderate tree coverage.

When you need more frequent cleaning

Clean three or four times per year if: you have pine trees overhanging the roof (needles fall year-round and mat quickly), your home is surrounded by deciduous trees with heavy leaf fall, or you've had gutter clogs cause overflow before. After any major storm, do a quick visual inspection.

  • Pine trees nearby: add spring and late summer cleanings
  • Dense overhead tree coverage: 3-4 times per year
  • After major storms with significant debris
  • After roof work that may have pushed material into gutters

What clogged gutters actually cause

Water overflowing from clogged gutters doesn't just splash -- it saturates the soil against your foundation, seeps into basement walls, rots fascia boards, and can push back under roof shingles causing interior leaks. The $150-$250 cost of professional gutter cleaning is cheap insurance against $5,000-$25,000 in water damage.

Gutter guards: do they eliminate cleaning?

Gutter guards reduce cleaning frequency but don't eliminate it. Fine mesh guards ($1,500-$3,500 professionally installed) perform best and may reduce cleaning to every 2-3 years. Cheaper foam and screen guards can trap debris on top and still require regular maintenance. No guard is truly maintenance-free.

Bottom line

Twice a year for most homes, three to four times if you have significant tree coverage. Budget $150-$250 per cleaning -- it's one of the cheapest forms of water damage prevention.
