Garage Doors

Why won't my garage door open?

Garage door stuck? Here's the troubleshooting sequence — from dead remote batteries to broken springs.

Most common causes

  • 01Dead remote batteries
  • 02Photo eye sensors misaligned or blocked
  • 03Broken torsion spring
  • 04Disconnected trolley carriage
  • 05Opener motor failure
  • 06Track obstruction

What to do right now

1
Try the wall button — if that works, the remote battery is dead or remote needs reprogramming
2
Check the photo eye sensors at the bottom of the door frame — wipe lenses and ensure they face each other (indicator light should be solid)
3
Pull the emergency release cord to disconnect from the opener and try to lift manually — if extremely heavy, the spring is broken (do not force it)

When to call a professional

Call a technician if: the door is off track, a spring is broken, or the door makes grinding sounds. Do not attempt to repair or adjust torsion springs yourself — they are under extreme tension and are dangerous.
