Why won't my garbage disposal turn on?
Garbage disposal not working? Most issues are a 5-second fix. Here's the troubleshooting sequence before calling a plumber.
Most common causes
- 01Overload — thermal protector tripped
- 02Humming but not spinning: jam
- 03No sound at all: power issue or blown reset button
- 04Leaking: worn seal or cracked body
What to do right now

Press the reset button on the bottom of the unit — if it was overloaded, this brings it back2
If humming but not spinning: turn off, insert an Allen wrench in the hole on the bottom and turn to free the jam3
Check that the power switch works and the outlet under the sink has power4
Do NOT put your hand in the disposalWhen to call a professional
Call if: the unit hums after clearing the jam (motor may be seized), it's leaking from the bottom (internal seal failure — replace, not repair), or it's over 12 years old and failing repeatedly.
