Why is there no power in one room?

Lost power in one room but not others? Here's how to diagnose it in under 5 minutes.

Most common causes

  • 01Tripped circuit breaker
  • 02GFCI outlet tripped (protects multiple outlets on same circuit)
  • 03Loose wire connection at the panel or junction box
  • 04Blown fuse (older homes)

What to do right now

1
Go to your breaker panel and look for any breaker in the middle position or off — flip fully off then fully back on
2
Check for GFCI outlets in the affected area or adjacent rooms — press Reset
3
Check if any affected outlets have the GFCI test/reset buttons built in

When to call a professional

Call an electrician if: the breaker trips again immediately, you can't find a tripped GFCI, or the home has a fuse panel (fuses that blow repeatedly indicate a wiring problem).
