Basement Finishing in Chicago: what to know
Many Chicago basements take on water during spring thaw, so a finish should start with confirming drainage, a working sump or overhead sewer setup, and moisture-resistant framing. Basement bedrooms need proper egress windows, and low greystone ceilings often favor drop ceilings that keep pipes accessible. Finishing work generally needs a permit from the city, and planning over winter lets construction begin once spring flooding risk is understood.
